(Hangzhou, China Oct. 14th 2010) In the crusade to build participation and recognition of the Surfing and Skating lifestyle in China, Wabsono International and Surfing China held the “Surfing China Festival”, “China Action Sports Expo” and the first annual “China Action Sports Retail Summit” in the city of Hangzhou, Zehjiang, China.

Wabsono’s Director of Business development, Glenn Brumage stated, “China is so large, diverse and unfamiliar with Surfing and Skating that without the passionate participation of Specialty Retailers promoting the sports and lifestyle at ground level, our Action Sports lifestyle may never get any traction”.

For this reason Wabsono gathered US Retailers, Surf and Skate Brands as well as Chinese Retailers to the three-day Surfing China Tidal Bore Festival in order to start a dialog and share each other’s stoke for what we live.

The summit included panel discussions and Q&A sessions on how Surfing and Skating grew in the early years, how retail is evolving in China, and how US Brands and Independent Retailers partnered to grow the lifestyle and their businesses in cooperation.

This email started out as a briefing for my mother and father but then I decided post it on my blog. Enjoy and sorry for mistakes im pretty jet lagged....

Made it to China safely. Due to the flight being empty, I discovered I am officially three seat lengths long on Asiana Airlines long. I am finally satisfied with being 5feet -4 inches. I got to surf the tidal bore wave yesterday and, yes, I have become first femal to ever to surf this wave. Its an amazing thing and you can't miss me on my super bright pink longboard. I am very excited to be apart of a growing sport and giant new industry here in China. We have walks of all lives with us including political leaders, business owners, families, pro surfers, media, and camera men.

Qiantang River Tidal Bore Day One...

The wave comes in a very rapid pace with the incoming tide. We time the wave coming towards us, launch the pwc's , head upriver a few miles, then chase it and ride it until it dies. Different parts of the rivers make for the wave to increase and decrease in size and the way the river is shaped effects it. To put it in perspective, it takes almost 30 minutes from our launching point to get to the part of the wave we are allowed to surf due to restrictions and permits. When I first saw it coming at me my heart was shaking. It was a giant wall of whitewater in the distance heading right towards our skis. "Is that it?" We honestly couldn't tell until it got closer to our skis. Once it arrived we all were in shock. It was a stunning site. The river is not only huge abut now there is a giant wave spanning completely across it forcing it's way towards us. We ride as long as we can before our legs or the wave give out, then try to switch partners on the jet ski before the wave crumbles us. There are two police escorts, camera crew on boats aside us and two differnt jet skis for the surf teams. Big wave surfers Jaime Sterling and Mikala jones are one team. I am with partnered with Wingnut, so we are learning how to trade off quickly, maneuver our giant longboards around on a tiny ski, avoid getting attacked by the "Silver Dragon," while still trying to make it look effortless. Yesterday, was a bit challenging when I flew off the back of the ski during a transition because my leash got wrapped around the sled. Luckily, I landed right before the giant wall of water, whipped myself around, and rode the surge until my legs were burning. It was amazing and like nothing I have ever experienced in my life. Giant long turns, noserides and lots of knee-time when the open face turns to a wall of whitewater to allow my legs to rest then proceed again. Poor Wingy didn't get a proper turn, so tomorrow I will be the first driver. Meanwhile, there are large barges on the river to avoid, metal sticking out in various places due to construction, rocks, four major bridges to dodge and lots of weather elements in our face. Its pouring rain at the moment.

It is predicted that over a few million viewers will be heading down to watch this natural phenomenon that has been going on for over 300 years. This is the third time in history that surfing has been allowed by the government officials. On a normal full moon occurance it is illegal to surf in this river and most likely unsafe for a beginner or average person. Who knows if this will ever change, but the fact that we are here promoting action sports and a healthy lifestyle is a huge start.

I had a camera I bought in the airport that was both video and waterproof to show everyone what we saw up close and personal but when I got mobbed by media it got stolen in the mix. I am function on a only a few cylinders due to the lack of sleep, very jet lagged and slightly hungry. Our meals have been more than outstanding, well that is if you like traditional Chinese dishes, which I am picker eater so I stick to the greens. I like to pass on eyeballs, crazy looking fried things and bizarre looking dishes. The vegetables, noodles and my chocolate covered Goji berries I imported in have been quite tasty. I had the best peas I have ever had in my life yesterday. I didn't eve know I liked peas. Who would have thought?

Last night we enjoyed a dinner with our entire crew and translators. Then we were spoiled with a fantastic Chinese foot massage. So life really isnt too bad out here in China. I am relaxed, excited, and ready to take my cute bright pink longboard out for another spin on the challenging Silver Dragon River.

My alarm just went off which means it's time to go.

1st Place MSA Contest Sept 11-12

Held in beautiful weather with small but fun 1-3' surf at world-famous First Point, Malibu, the MSA Classic entered over 275 athletes representing California's elite surfing clubs from Sunset Cliffs to Santa Cruz. Also participating were teams from the Hawaiian Longboard Federation, Virginia Longboard Federation, Noosa Malibu Club (Qld, AU) and, for the first time, the Salinas Longboard Surf Club from San Sebastian, Spain.

"This year our youngest competitor is 9, our oldest, 79 -- the surfing collective on display. A little something for everyone, and all at historic Malibu," said MSA President Michael Blum. " It's a privilege for us to annually host one of the only contests at First Point. Thanks to our friends and partners who joined us for the weekend and to members of Malibu's surfing community who've helped to make this one of the world's most famous waves."

Fifteen minute heats, with a maximum of five waves ridden, made it extra challenging for surfers. Not only was the surf small, but tidal surges played a big role for each surfer in the lineup. Strategy and carefully selecting each wave was a determining factor in order to move into the next final rounds.

The event's only perfect 10-point ride was turned in by surfer/shaper Kevin Connelly (Men 30-39 Finals, La Jolla Shores Surfing Association). With style to spare and noseriding skills that have won him several titles -- including the 2009 U.S. Open Corona Noseriding Invitational -- "KC" connected tens and fives on a wave from the top of First Point to the beach, easily accumulating 25-plus seconds of tip time.

Other standout performances were delivered by: repeat champions Tony Silvagni (Men 20-29, Virginia Longboard Federation) and Mary Osborne (Women 19-34, Ventura Surf Club), Keoni Bloomfield and Sierra Lerback (both of the Hawaiian Longboard Federation), and Josh Constable and Matt.

Not only was the beach lined with talented surfers young and seasoned, celebrities filled the Surfrider Foundation tent surrounded by paparazzi. The Fifth Annual Celebrity Expression Session was able to raise over $29,000- a 500% increase in funds raised from last year- to help Surfrider continue it’s efforts towards protecting our world’s ocean, waves and beaches.
This year’s event was hosted by musician Martyne Lenoble and actress Christina Applegate. Commentating from the microphone with the ASP judges was pro surfer-environmentalist James Pribram The celebrities, which included Anthony Kiedis and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction’s bassist Eric Avery, and actors Austin Nichols, Brian Geraghty, Eric Balfour and Sam Trammell, were all treated to a rare opportunity; the chance to surf Malibu’s famed First Point all by themselves.. For each wave caught and ridden, event sponsors donated $200. Additionally, away from the water, celebrities encouraged their social network followers to make donations to the Surfrider Foundation via www.crowdrise.com and raised an additional $4,600.

It was a classic Malibu weekend at it’s finest. There were great competitors, lineup spectators and fun glassy surf. Can’t wait for next year’s event.

Major support for the 2010 MSA Classic is provided by Global Surf Industries. Other major partners include: Jim Beam Suftag, Surfrider Foundation, Duke's Malibu, Emergen-C, Clif Bar, California State Parks, and 100.3 FM The Sound.
A portion of proceeds from the MSA Classic will be donated to organizations working to improve water quality at Surfrider Beach.

Surfing China today announced the names of the four invited surfers to this years Qintang Tidal Bore event scheduled for September 23rd - 25th in Hangzhou, China.

Returning for a second year is Hawaiian big wave charger, Jamie Sterling. New this year, Jamie’s regular tow partner and fellow Hawaiian Mikala Jones of the famous North Shore Joneses. Past years athletes included Rusty and Greg Long, Mark Healy and Serghino Laus.

On the second ski, co-star of Endless Summer “part deux,” Longboarder and SUP’er, Robert “Wingnut” Weaver of Santa Cruz will be joined by the co-star and winner of the longboard divison of MTV’s “Surfer Girls,” the multi-talented Mary Osborne of Ventura.
The event is held during the Fall lunar equinox, in the beautiful Chinese city of Hangzhou. The Qintang river bore breaks for over 30 miles and is regularly between 9 and 12 ft faces. There are big rolling faces, walls of white water and reflecting wedged barrels along the way. Four to six world class surfers will trade cut backs, slashes, airs and tail whips as they ride the daily bore to the cheers and amazement of literally hundreds of thousands of people lining the shores.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a disaster that Americans have had to live with all summer and is only now beginning to creep from the public spotlight. Despite broad outrage, it can often seem a world away from the Southern California coast, only a nightmare piped into our TV sets each night.

Pro surfer and owner of Aloha School of Surfing James Pribram had to do more than watch. After starting his Eco Warrior Project in 2006, he focused his energies on the idea of teaching surfers and others to “save a wave, clean up the water where they live and make a difference in their own backyard.” The project, which has taken him around the world, will become a documentary in 2011.

The 39-year-old Laguna Beach native has now put together an ongoing series of trips with fellow surfers to see firsthand what is happening in the gulf and help raise awareness and funds for the gulf region. His most recent was a stand up paddle trip with surfers Mary Osborne and Chuck Patterson, paddling in hazmat suits and respirators through the bayou. His next trip will be in October for his People of Sound fundraiser in Mississippi.

Even though this is still a water issue, it seems a big jump for an Orange County surfer to pack up his paddleboard and go to the site of the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. This was no surf trip. Why did you decide to do it?
I don’t have some fantastic answer other than to say, I care. When you grow up on the beach, it’s everything. The ocean has always been my first love.

When I was there with a friend in February on a canoe trip for Reader’s Digest, I got a glimpse of what was happening [after Katrina] and that Southern hospitality. I knew after the first trip I had to make a statement and stand up for those people. When you feel someone’s sadness, you can’t not help. Hope was high after Katrina, but the stories go on forever and you hear how the residents want to help and be part of the cleanup but are being turned back. Just testing the boundaries one day, I walked up to a cleanup crew member. The guy just said to me, “I’m on the phone.” They should hire the residents there. They care. I can’t imagine an oil spill closing our beaches and being told you can’t go out.

If you go down there, it’s something out of "The Twilight Zone." When they [BP] should be serving these people breakfast, you have crews that are so standoffish, it’s awful. To say it’s complicated is an understatement. It’s something you can’t really explain. You have to go. It’s not Grand Isle anymore, it’s Grand Oil.

The people I met remind me of the people I grew up with in Laguna Beach. The people who are generations of shrimpers there are like generations of surfers here. I think the least I can do is everything I can, so I came up with the idea of doing a stand up paddle in hazmat suits and respirators. [Fellow Southern California surfers] Chuck Patterson and Mary Osborne joined me and went down for the Save the Sound [fundraiser] in Mississippi.

So now the well is sealed, hopefully for good, and some experts are saying the oil is disappearing. Based on your experience, what do you believe?
How can you believe a company that has proven again and again to be a liar? That oil is somewhere, most likely on the bottom of the ocean. I’ve seen it firsthand and I’m going back. It doesn’t just disappear.

Let’s take the opportunity here to explain what you intend this to be.
It’s not really about me getting exposure. It’s about shining a light on people dealing with major environmental issues. These people are trying to put food on the table. If I can tell their stories, then it’s more about their story than mine. And about empowering them and helping them solve problems in their own communities and finding better solutions. With Katrina, these people are getting kicked in the teeth again. When we had bad things happen in Laguna, we had people rally around. That’s what America is all about. If this happened on the West Coast it wouldn’t have turned out this way, so why is it being handled like that out there?

The environmental movement continues to evolve into sub-groups with their own missions. Do you consider yourself a conservationist, a “water-firster?” How would you describe yourself?
I would say I’m more blue than green. My passion, my niche, has always been about preserving our oceans. That’s what I know. That’s what I fight for. I view them as playgrounds. Collectively, we should be doing all we can. Together we can all make a difference. A united front with a big voice is something people can’t turn away from.

I know so many surfers, with rare exceptions, who consider themselves environmentalists of some sort or other. What do you think it is that makes that so?
I can’t speak for others. But growing up in Laguna Beach, the ocean has always been my sanctuary. Not one day will I ever take it for granted. When you’re lucky enough to grow up on the beach, it’s only natural to give back to something that’s given you so much.

Tell me about the Eco Warrior Project.
I started that in 2006. I would travel around the world, going to areas with various environmental issues. Then I’d research what’s happening and meet with both sides. In Chicago, they’ve been trying to get surfing legalized. I met Jack Flynn, who was arrested for surfing. He shared a cell with three bank robbers. Within six months we changed that and now you can surf legally in Chicago.

It’s about compromise for better solutions. To do that, both sides have to be treated with respect. I don’t like the word activist, but maybe I’m an ambassador. You think about the guy strapping himself to a tree and living a completely different way. These stereotypes slow down the process. Whatever you want to call them, listen to their message and don’t judge a book by its cover.

How has your project fueled further adventures?
You certainly don’t get rich by doing what I do. I live check by check. I had a dream [of] growing up to be a pro surfer. I want to make sure that every generation has that option. We have to take care of our environment for those kids. Money is always an issue. I get by on very little to be honest. It’s really the dreams of the next generation I’m trying to keep alive.

There is never any shortage of things to discuss when it comes to the environment. So what are things you’d like to make films about?
I’ve been pretty focused on the gulf. But the one thing that is always shocking to me is that nonprofits don’t reach out. My whole thing is about working with people to find solutions, whether it’s here or Malibu or wherever. Also, I don’t think beaches should be privatized or closed.

I’m probably going back to the gulf next week. This story is not going away even if the media will. Not for 10 or 15 years. That oil is still out there. It hasn’t hit yet, but it will. Oil and water don’t mix. In every issue I’ve been involved in, there is a path to the end of it. In the gulf, there isn’t, and that’s [what's] so sad.

For the sake of optimism, has the disaster in the gulf allowed us to see a possible turning point for environmentalism?
I absolutely think it’s a turning point for the environmental movement. They’ve stirred up a hornet’s nest. We can’t get off oil tomorrow, but we can ask for stricter guidelines to be put in place so this won’t happen again. It’s the least we can do. We don’t want this to happen again. [The question is]: How can we do that?

David Pu’u has swum with the sharks 21 times and had his surfing photography appear in famous publications, but he’d just as soon stay well out of focus when the spotlight turns to him and his deeds.

The reclusive artist says the ocean, around which most of his life’s been framed, is all about solitude. He would not allow a mug shot of himself for this story, nor any photos of his studio. Said the longtime Venturan: “I spend all my time trying to maintain my privacy. I’d rather if no one knew who I was.”

That’s what Pu’u thought would happen in the mid-1990s, when he gave up life as CEO of his own surfboard and apparel company, which included beach shops in Ventura and Santa Barbara, and turned to photography.

But things keep getting in the way. Like his award-winning, high-profile globe-trotting work, which has appeared in Surfer magazine and The Surfer’s Journal, as well as The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, Time and Playboy, to name just a few.

Pu’u has surfaced long enough again for an exhibit — another rarity for him — at Fox Fine Jewelry in downtown Ventura, done in tandem with longtime collaborator Sandra Clermont, a painter and Aussie import who bases some of her paintings on his shots. For those who might wash down their art with a martini and a meal, the exhibit also has spilled over onto the walls at the adjoining J’s Tapas restaurant.

For these two artists, water, coast and surf are soulful spots. Pu’u spoke of how all life came from the sea, and how human blood is saline.

“It’s a fascinating thing to be in,” Pu’u said of seawater. “It’s a very visceral attraction.”

Clermont calls surfing “an art form in its own right.”

“It’s at the core of my being,” she said in a separate interview. “I love everything about surfing and the lifestyle, and the ocean provides an endless array of ideas to paint from.”

‘The beautiful stuff’

Despite his shy nature, the 53-year-old Pu’u was an engaging and genial interview.

He’s at a loss for how quickly his photography career — he started at age 11 with his dad’s Army-issued Nikon camera, but that was largely dabbling — has blossomed. Being a pro surfer for years, where he was around the photography end of it a lot and picked up a few things, has helped, he allowed.

When he started shooting professionally, he submitted stuff to old surfing contacts who told him to pursue it. One thing led to another, he said, “and the work became a virus that went everywhere.”

Mary Osborne, a 28-year-old pro surfer who lives in Ventura and has gone on shoots with Pu’u around the world, thinks she knows why.

“He’s very quiet and humble, but you can tell there’s a lot going on in that brain,” she said. “He can capture things you don’t even see. He’s different from others — he has a really unique eye for surf photography. I mean, I just surf; he does all the beautiful stuff.”

Osborne, who runs a surf camp for kids and a tanning business when not off competing somewhere, has gone with Pu’u to the Maldives, Panama, Mexico and other locales.

“I definitely could not have done a lot of things I did without Dave,” said Osborne, who’s known him since she was in her mid-teens.

She also saluted him for mentoring her on business aspects of surfing, modeling and such.

His photos, she noted, have become “extremely well-known in the surfing community.”

Pu’u was born in Santa Barbara and graduated from Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta and Santa Barbara City College, where he got a degree in business management.

Pu’u is of Hawaiian-Polynesian descent, and his surname derives from a longer name that his family shortened more than 150 years ago. He had relatives in Hawaii, and visited them often. The ocean became a lifestyle.

He competed in swimming and water polo (as well as mountain biking). In the late 1970s, he turned pro surfer, competing far and wide, often at the whim of his sponsors.

In the early 1980s, he moved to Ventura. Soon, he poured his surfing knowledge into his own company, under the Morning Star name. He had board-and-apparel shops in Santa Barbara and Ventura, and three more were on the drawing board. He had a radio show on Santa Barbara’s KTYD.

But some things didn’t click. He became dismayed that the surfing industry’s craftsmen couldn’t afford to live in Southern California. His personal life was crumbling, including a divorce (he has two sons, 23 and 21, from the marriage).

“I said, ‘You know, things don’t look right — I’m outta here,’” Pu’u recalled. “Everything was spiraling. That’s why I became a photographer. I figured if I went behind the camera, no one would need to know me.”

Despite occasionally being in what he called “the most dangerous circumstances possible,” Pu’u said he’s never had anything go horribly wrong.

That includes those 21 swims with great white sharks off such places as Ventura, Port Hueneme, the Rincon and, farther north, Moss Landing, where he saw a 16-footer.

“I’m on swim number 22 right now, coming up this fall, I think,” he said breezily. “That gets a little exciting.”

Pu’u claims that white sharks can sense a charge in a camera battery from 10 miles away.

“I’ve only had them come to take me away twice, but I talked them out of it,” he said wryly. “Usually, they are just like a cat. They come up to you, and then they leave you alone.”

Pu’u, who is a certified rescue boat operator, is known for shooting images on the move — be it from a helicopter, plane, Jet Ski or a board. That’s helped produce gripping you-are-there shots from inside the tube and a wonderful play of colors between sunlight and water, many taken off the county coast. His other ports of call with lens in tow have included the Seychelles, Bali, Java and Canada.

Pu’u said a good photo communicates an emotion, a tip he got from a female colleague who once tutored him on creativity.

His art takes a great deal of physical ability. He moaned about having to train longer as he ages, a fact that worries him because what he does is still a burning passion.

“You have to be physically, mentally and emotionally at the top of your game to get the image you want,” Pu’u said.

He has other interests. When he picked up the lens professionally, he also dived right into cinematography, knowing, as he put it, that “there was no money in surf photography.”

He’s mostly done films lesser known to the general public. More recently, he shot the in-water action scenes in Moorpark writer Jeff McElroy’s small surf-themed movie “Goofyfoot” that made the festival rounds earlier this year.

Pu’u could also pick up a brush. An uncle, an art professor at the University of Hawaii, taught him how to paint when Pu’u was 5. It’s one reason he loves collaborating with fine artists such as Clermont.

Painting in the spectrum

Clermont moved to Ventura from Australia nine years ago. Soon, aware of Pu’u’s work through surfing publications, she called him and asked if she could paint from his photographs. They’ve worked together since.

Pu’u, she said, captures a “beauty of tranquility” in his photography. On canvas, she tries to convey feelings of freedom, escape, reflection and peace. She derives those from surfing, but thinks the hustle and bustle of everyday life robs people of them.

“If I can transport the viewer to a place of peace, if even for just a moment, then I have succeeded,” the 42-year-old artist said.

The centerpiece of her smaller portion of the exhibit, a work titled “The Rincon,” is based on a Pu’u shot. All her works on display here are oils on canvas, all done in the past three years.

Clermont has a habit of continuing her paintings on to her handmade frames.

“It’s something different,” she said. “I really like the idea. It plays with the visual mind. It’s a bit 3-D-ish. Sometimes it works better than others, but you gotta try.”

Her work is bathed in vivid colors. Asked how she conjures those, Clermont cracked, “They make brightly colored paints.” But seriously folks, those gorgeous purples, pinks, oranges and such are what’s etched in her brain from her early-morning and late-afternoon surf sessions.

“These colors are so intense at times in the natural world that they are borderline surreal,” she observed.

Familiar turf — and surf

Clermont was born in Victoria state in Australia. When she was 6, the family moved to a tropical island off Papua New Guinea when her dad took a job in a sawmill there. It was a “very remote” existence; school was by correspondence. One year there, they were the only white family around; she and her siblings played with native children. She has fond memories — “I was able to run wild.”

The family later resettled on Australia’s Gold Coast, where her love of surfing and painting became ingrained. She later spent more than 10 years traveling within her homeland and abroad.

She had a simple answer for her move Stateside to Ventura.

“I married a Yank,” she said, her laughter conveying a typical Aussie cheerfulness. “He imported a bride.”

Being married has freed her to pursue her art, said Clermont, who remembers too much bar and restaurant work from her single days.

The Ventura area, she noted, has similarities in beauty to coastal Australia. Her local surfing haunts include the C Street-Surfer’s Point area in Ventura and Faria Beach farther up the Rincon. That’s reflected in paintings such as “C-St Dreaming” and “Before the Carpark.”

Clermont thanked Pu’u for his “gracious willingness to share” and considers it natural that they teamed on a show. She hopes there will be more. For Pu’u, surfing is more pastime than pursuit these days. He’s grateful for what he has and thankful that people still call him with work. He touched on a feeling Clermont and Osborne know well.

“I get to do some really nice stuff and hang out with some really cool people all around the world,” he said.

Every minute passing means more beaches are covered in brown oily tar balls. Weather and winds fluctuate in all directions, pushing crude oil into new areas of fresh white sand beaches, covering sea animals, rivers and marshes. Fish are dying; crabs are now toxic, and mammals slowly are being poisoned. Three days ago today, the beach that I spent watching beautiful fireworks explode into the sky, is now spotted with tar, endless miles of boom and BP scouring the beach. The same beach I listened to families cheering and kids running around happily in celebration of our country's independence is the mirror opposite of the evening of July 4, 2010. The feeling of independence in the southern states has now vanished.

I don't even live in the Gulf and my mind was consumed minute after minute with mind-boggling questions. What is completely unsettling is one beach remains wide open with people swimming, while 100 feet away another beach is closed. Is this not the same ocean waters? Isn't it the same air we are breathing from one beach to another so close by? Who is in charge down here? What is our government doing to stop this?

One can only imagine how the fisherman, business owners and avid beach lovers are feeling. You honestly have no idea until you see it with your own eyes and hear the stories with your own ears what is really happening with this tragedy.

Gulf Port fisherman, Skipper Tom, put a lot in perspective for our crew. We were fortunate to sit with him for a morning as he explained what is honestly happening to the fisherman in the Gulf.

“We don’t know where our future is. People have no clue the magnitude of this spill and the effects it will have,” said Tom. “My son was going to take over my business in a few years and now I don’t think he can. I wanted to teach my grandson to fish and I don’t even know if that is possible for the future. It’s sad to think we know more about our universe than our oceans. I have over $145,000 in my boat with my credentials. Overnight, I have nothing.”

What seems to be commonality amongst people here is the aggravation of communication with BP. The hired BP workers are unfamiliar with the local waters they are paid to look after.

Skipper John explains in disgust, “These BP officials don’t know how to read swells, buoys or weather reports. They are hiring men for the Vessels of Opportunity program who can barely drive a boat. We have local fisherman who have been denied getting on this program that need the work.”

Skipper John is just one of the thousands of affected people we spoke with.

Just as the South’s economy was on the rise, they have been hit with yet, another disaster. Strange how our nation’s economic downfall and this oil spill are both manmade catastrophes. At least Katrina was a natural disaster where one could rebuild the physical elements of their life that were lost. At this point in time, the future is entirely unknown. So who is to blame in this situation? We easily point fingers at BP, our government and towards other people. The reality is, we are all to blame. It is time to stop blaming others and take matters into our own hands. We need to make changes to protect our Mother Earth, changes for this current generation and, most importantly, the future generations to come. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tragedy.

Gulf Alert 2010 Here we come!

Project Save Our Surf and The Eco-Warrior Project are joining forces to launch "GULF ALERT 2010". The aim of the Gulf Alert initiative is to raise awareness of actionable ways the surfing public can help shift the direction from pollution toward renewal. Gulf Alert 2010 will accomplish these goals with direct action on-the ground, in the water and over the skies of the Gulf area.

On Saturday, July 3rd ECO-Warrior James Pribram, professional surfer and model Mary Osborne, along with champion stand-up paddler Chuck Patterson and actor Richard Burgi will leave for Gulf Port Miss. The Gulf Alert team will stand-up paddle through areas of the spill in protest of the devastation that is plaguing that region of coastline as well as document a fly-over and participate in local wildlife rescue efforts.

Details of the paddle mission will be made public afterwards due to the conflict of interest within local agencies and restricted areas of coastline.

Project Save Our Surf was founded in 2008 by actress and surfer Tanna Frederick to raise funds, awareness and hope around clean ocean issues. For more information, check out projectsaveoursurf.org.

Over $50,000 raised to clean our oceans last weekend in Huntington Beach. What an amazing weekend we had with 24 hours of straight surfing. I was somehow put in the 2-3am heat, which wasnt easy to keep my eyes open before my session, but our team "Eco Warriors" managed to to place 1st in the recreational division. It was a successful and exciting weekend in Huntington Beach. Our team, The Eco Warriors, managed to come into first place in the Recreational Division. We had a blast surfing all the through the wee hours of the night. I must admit, it was a huge challenge surfing in dark at Huntington Pier. Flood lights were set up to help light up the waters, but the reflections made it extremely difficult. It was well worth it!!! The results are huge and rewarding for every beach lover!

It was a long night.

Surfers celebrated at noon today after raising $50,000 during a 24-hour surf-a-thon put on by Project Save Our Surf, an event in Huntington Beach that brought celebrities and big-name surfers together for ocean awareness.

Team Billabong took home the first ever Surf 24 win after beating out nine other teams made up of surf brands and recreational teams.

The unique competition started on noon on Saturday, and had early appearances by many stars who drew a crowd, including True Blood’s Sam Trammell, 24′s Eric Balfour, and Mad Men’s John Slattery. To read more about Saturday’s action, click here.

Actress Tanna Frederick created the event, helping to raise $50,000 for ocean causes

Paul Tomson – brother of co-host of event Shaun Tomson -was beaming as he got out of his late-night heat at 10 p.m.

“Unreal, I’m just having so much fun,” he said. “It’s so beautiful, surfing a contest at night. The whole event has a heartwarming, beautiful vibe to it, … it’s all about goodness.”

“It gives the true feeling of surfing – it’s about giving back, it’s not rigid hard, competitive stuff.”

Even though it was casual contest, surfers were serious about waves. Even during the late-night hours, surfer were scoring waves earning 9 points (out of ten) and higher.

Seal Beach surfer Chris Waring – surfing for Jacks Surfboards team – competed in a total six heats during the 24-hour period, including from midnight straight to 3 a.m.

“It wasn’t bad,” he said after competing in the last heat of the day.

It was a different feeling, he said. He’s never surfed in the middle of the night before – and because the lights were so bright, you really had to feel for waves rather than look for them.

“It was harder to see the lip,” he said.

The recreational winning team went to the “Eco Warriors,” led by Laguna Beach surfer James Pribrim, who was also given the Hope award.

“He has done amazing work all over the planet,” said event creator Tanner Frederick.

Host PT Townend, who commentated much of the event and surfed a midnight heat – was stumbling a bit over words on the microphone by the end of it.

“I think there’s a lot of people who need a full night’s sleep, that would be me,” he said, chuckling. “When you’re my age, you should be asleep by midnight.”

Frederick, the founder and co-organizer of Project Save Our Surf: SURF 24, will be among the actors taking the waves alongside professional surfers in the third annual charity event. Her team, the Redheaded Furies, consists largely of people who surf in their spare time, and it may take a little, well, fury for them to outscore some of the highest-profile surfers in the region.

"I have a lot of aggressive people on my team," said Frederick, who recently starred in "Hollywood Dreams," the film festival favorite. "I have people who surf all the time and want to be pro surfers."

Frederick, though, is quick to note that whichever team wins the 24-hour surf-a-thon, the ultimate winner is the ocean. The proceeds from Project Save Our Surf will be split evenly among three environmental charities: Heal the Bay, the Surfrider Foundation and Inside the Outdoors.

The fundraiser, which Frederick launched in Santa Monica two years ago, is making its Surf City debut this year. The action begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and continues nonstop until noon Sunday, with live music, mural-painting, eco-friendly vendors and more around Pier Plaza.

The 10 teams competing include five sponsored by athletic brands and dominated by pro surfers – Mary Osborne, Buttons Kaluhiokalani and Courtney Conlogue are among those expected to compete – and five recreational teams consisting of amateurs. Each team will be joined by two celebrity surfers, including actors Chad Lowe, Sean Patrick Flanery and Zoe Bell.

Teams can consist of between six and 24 members – the only requirement is that a surfer representing each group is on the water every hour. At the end of the fundraiser, the team that made the highest overall score wins a Nixon gold engraved watch for each member.

Huntington Beach surfer Peter "PT" Townend, who co-organized the event this year with Frederick, noted that since a surfing score depends in part on the power of the wave, an underdog may just come out on top.

"Over 24 hours, consistency will win," he said. "No question."

Ocean Minders: An Interview with Pro Surfers Mary Osborne and Jennifer Flannigan

As I drive down Highway 101, I’m passing world-famous surf break after world-famous surf break. I'm in Southern California to surf and meet up with some other environmentalist surfers that I've been in email contact with for ages but have never officially met. I stop at Rincon, one of the best righthander waves in the world. I don’t paddle out because I have to meet pro surfer Mary Osborne just down the road, but I take stock of the state of synthetics on the shore. Among the rocks, I see what I have come to expect: tons of plastic debris, everywhere I look.

Mary was born and raised in Ventura and though she travels a lot, she always seems to come back. Ventura is home and it’s the small town feel of it that Mary both likes and despises. She can’t go anywhere without seeing someone she knows which is both a blessing and a curse. What keeps her here is family and an amazing array of really good waves. But over time, she’s watched the area change dramatically, seeing more and more garbage on the beaches, and more pollution in general. As a Patagonia Ambassador, Mary travels quite a bit and has seen first-hand how plastic has begun to dominate beaches worldwide: From Indonesia to Taiwan to Mexico, she says, the beaches are trashed. “People always say, ‘You’re so lucky to be able to visit all these tropical paradises,’" she tells me, "and yes, I feel fortunate, but then I’m like—really, they’re not actually that pretty anymore.”

This sentiment strikes a chord. We talk about the good old times when plastic wasn’t everywhere, and about how we might be the last generation to remember beaches the way we all like them: pristine. She tells me a story about a recent trip the the Bahamas. Tourist destinations like the Bahamas have a dirty secret: They hide their plastic pollution. “I road a bike around the island and the tourist areas are all clean like the postcards, but once you get away from them, you see the garbage. Plastic garbage everywhere and all you smell is burning plastic. I don't blame the locals for burning it because what else are they going to do with it? It's not like they have a system for dealing with so much plastic." Mary has made sincere efforts to curb her consumption of single use plastics and adds, “The solution to plastic in the ocean starts at home.”

Down the road in Encinitas, I meet up with another pro-surfer, the writer Jennifer Flannigan. Jennifer grew up in Florida, but has lived in Southern California for five years now. In both places, she’s seen all manner of plastic debris on her home beaches. Like Mary, Jennifer travels for surf photo shoots and has witnessed plastic garbage all over the world. But here, just south of the famous surf break Swami’s, Jennifer shows me a spot where she found the most disgusting plastic object yet—put it this way, it’s something plastic and it’s for personal use in private.

Though plastic pollution is something she sees everywhere, she admits that she’s no expert on the subject. I tell her that few people actually are and that’s the reason I’m doing what I’m doing: traveling the coast of the United States and Canada to share my stories of sailing to the center of the ocean and finding the same types plastic garbage out their that litter the beaches here. I hope some the high-profile people I meet along the way will spread the word, too.

I show her two samples taken by the 5 Gyres Project from the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. I like showing people the samples; they always produce a strong reaction and I like to speculate on what’s going on in their heads as they consider these little volumes of sea water taken thousands of miles from land. As she studies the vile I can see the wheels spin in her head. Jennifer is an eloquent speaker and when she articulates a thought she considers what she’s going to say before she says it. Especially when it matters. Her look is one of disbelief and quiet rage as she holds the sample, watching the colorful flecks of plastic spin—a gyre sample looks like a vulgar snow globe.

“The increased individualism and the modern constructs of the globalized society we live in creates more and more consumption and depletes our natural resources for things like packaging," Jennifer says. "Take Japan; everything in Japan is single-use, prepackaged—and it’s this garbage that ends up on the beaches there.” But despite the daunting scale of the plastic pollution problem, Jennifer remains hopeful.

An Interview with Mary Osborne

It’s hard to find a picture of Mary Osborne where she’s not smiling ear to ear. Maybe it’s because she just got done with a great surf session or maybe it’s because she’s living her dreams. Probably, it’s a bit of both. Mary is that bright person in your life that sees life through the lens of their passion. That person who is always looking for the next ray of sunshine, the next adventure to unfold.

If you don’t have that kind of person in your life, then you need to get one. We suggest Mary be one of them. Her energy is contagious and her will is unbreakable. She will have success and she will have fun getting it. There’s always another wave, always another sunrise for Mary. Get to know her.

TDS: How has pursuing your dreams challenged and changed you?

OSBORNE: Pursuing my dreams shaped me entirely. I have learned so much about life and other cultures through surfing and traveling. Every adventure opens my eyes to new things. I am extremely grateful for what I have and don’t have. The challenges and risks I take have only made me a stronger, more educated and all around a better person. We all live on this planet together.

TDS: You dropped out of college to pursue surfing. Tell us about that decision?

OSBORNE: It wasn’t an easy decision for my family. My father and mother graduated from UCLA. My three older brothers all have college degrees. I didn’t enjoy school. I finished two years of college, received my A.A. degree, attempted UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara) and then dropped out.

I really wanted to try professional surfing. I dreamed of traveling the world and seeing other cultures. I was working late hours at night in restaurants, going to school fulltime while trying to juggle professional surfing. I was not focused; I was unhappy during classes and needed to make a change for myself.

I told my parents I was dropping out and they gave me two months to figure “it” out before they cut me off their dime. A week later I got a phone call to go film the MTV Surf Girls show for two months. I decided to go for it, try to pursue my dreams and see what happens.

Seven years later, I am still doing what I love (knock on wood). I have been very fortunate in all that I have done so far in life. I often think about going back to college—I can guarantee I will be much more interested in the classes I decide to take. Well, if I choose to.

TDS: Why longboard?

OSBORNE: I started out riding shorter boards then slowly started riding bigger boards. I realized I liked the way longboarding looked and felt. It was graceful, elegant, and I enjoyed the way the gliding felt under my feet when riding a wave. When I first started surfing I only rode bigger, heavy—more traditional longboards.

I eventually started traveling and quickly realized I had to learn to ride everything. Now I ride shortboards, fun boards, single-fin, twin-fin, tri-fin longboards, basically anything I can get my hands on.

TDS: You are competitive by nature. Originally you got into surfing because you wanted to be better than the boys. Now, as an adult, what is the most compelling aspect of the sport: competition, community, and spiritual/mental aspect?

OSBORNE: I used to love to compete. I wanted to be the best and as a teen I competed for many years. As I got older my competitive side started to slowly diminish. I don’t seem to get as much out of winning or losing anymore. Sometimes (yet very rarely) I still surprise myself while in a contest, when the horn blows I get jitters in my stomach and get that rush of adrenaline that turns me back into a competitor. I don’t think you really ever lose the feeling of being a competitor. It’s amazing to win and its even better to be humbled.

Now days, I just love the joy of surfing. It’s far more spiritual for me. I enjoy those gorgeous sunrises, beautiful sunsets, and fantastic memorable rides. I have met so many amazing people through the ocean. Being near or in the ocean clears my mind of the everyday distractions. It keeps me healthy, young, adventurous and, most importantly, thankful. I try to never take my time in the water for granted.

TDS: Describe your personality using only oceanic-surf terms.

OSBORNE: Flowing, mellow—this is tough. (laughs)

TDS: Former TDS interviewee Chris Malloy said, “Surfing has become Hollywood.” Do you agree with this statement?

OSBORNE: Yes, surfing has gone Hollywood. From a business standpoint it can be good. Mainstream can mean bringing in higher sales, a broader marketing audience and so on. For true surfers, it can be total nightmare. Crowds, kooks, wannabees and all that. Everyone wants to walk, talk, act and look like a surfer. It’s kind of funny. Lots of celebrities are now into surfing. It’s the new “hot” thing to do. I personally think the hype is kind of over by now. From another standpoint, surfing is amazing. You really can’t blame them for trying it right?

TDS: As a girl, how did surfing shape you? How can it shape younger girls growing up?

OSBORNE: I started surfing when I was about 15 years old. It’s that point in a teenagers life when you start to notice boys and drugs, and you begin to grow into an adult. I used surfing as an outlet for many things. The best part was that it kept me on track. I quickly fell in love with surfing, so the things that can easily interfere with a teenager’s life and get them off track never did for me.

I was motivated to become a better surfer. I loved everything the ocean embodied and how it made me feel when I was in and near it. The ocean gave me a sense of confidence, independence and adventure. I played a lot of team sports, like volleyball and basketball—I was even a cheerleader.

But the of biggest allure of surfing was the independence—the one-on-one of the sport. No one was ever telling me what to do in the water. If I felt like riding a wave, I could. If I felt like not riding a wave I could do that as well. There were no coaches or parents in the lineup. The only people yelling at me were maybe my three older brothers; that helped me become a better surfer.

For young girls it’s an amazing sport. The amount of courage and confidence that is gained just off catching one wave is truly amazing. I teach surfing to a lot of young girls (as well as adult women) and it’s truly amazing to see their attitude and confidence significantly increase after riding their very first wave.

As I continue to grow as a woman, surfing plays a huge part in my life, my outlook and beliefs. I continue to be shaped by what I do in the water. Surfing not only makes me a more confident woman, it makes me a stronger person.

TDS: What is the number one thing that builds a person’s confidence?

OSBORNE: There are so many elements in life that build a person’s confidence. For me, it’s when I overcome a challenge or succeed when taking a risk. I’ve found that believing in my ability allows me to gain more mental toughness—which is key to succeeding on the waves and in life.

TDS: You’ve said that when surfing, “You can stop, take a deep breath and pay attention to the moment. You’re alone with your thoughts, focusing on the elements.” Do you think that people in our culture have forgotten how to be quiet and focus on beautiful things in life?

OSBORNE: Our society is so caught up with the everyday chaos that it can be very hard to stop and take a breath. It’s almost as if many of us have forgotten how to do so. We live in a face-paced environment with technology that is ever changing. It can be very hard to put down the cell phone, take time off work or go completely off the grid on a vacation.

It doesn’t matter how you do it, but I think it’s truly important for a person’s soul, mind and body to stop, take a breath and appreciate life. Sometimes slowing down just a small amount during the frenzy can be rewarding.

TDS: You have travelled the world and seen amazing places and met countless people. What one thing is constant everywhere you go?

OSBORNE: We are all living under the same stars. It may be different time zones and completely foreign cultures but when it comes down to it we are all looking at the exact same stars. (Yes, there are some places where you can see more stars than others.)

TDS: What continues to amaze you every time you see it?

OSBORNE: So many things! I am easily amazed! Perfect waves in warm water. Islanders waving hello and goodbye as I peer at them from a dingy offshore. Foreign children with huge grins and innocent eyes. Remote islands with small villages on them. A beautiful sunset and sunrise. Snow falling. Kangaroos. A successful, happy marriage. Falling in love. History. Birth. Life. Death.

Raised by Solimar Beach in Ventura, Calif., Mary Osborne picked up her first board at the age of 14. Mary is a classic triple threat. Most widely known for winning the longboard division of MTV’s “Surf Girls,” the pro surfer and surf model is also making her mark as a host and personality. Mary began promoting herself as a surf competitor while working with pro surfer and photographer David Pu’u to create beautiful modeling and surf images. The combination paid off when Mary became the first woman to grace the cover of The Surfer’s Path (a popular European Surf magazine). In 2003, she was nominated for a Teen Choice Award as “Best Female Athlete,” and was named the first “Action Girl of the Year” by Action Girl, Inc. Mary is also a surf ambassador for Patagonia.

Punta Sayulita Surf Contest wrap up

A final press piece from the benefit in Sayulita, Mexico I attended this month. We raised $9,000 for Reef Check and Punta Sayulita Foundation. It was a fantastic event with great locals, talented watermen-women, and unbelievably fun, mindless, warm waves. Sayulita's unique Mexican culture, friendly locals and relaxing vibe is ideal for travelers and surfers of all ages as well as abilities. This first annual event was a successful solid platform for future surfing events and the growth of the local community in Sayulita.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was visiting Costa Verde, International School. This school had a very different approach and vibe from other elementary schools I have visited. Costa Verde target goal is to not only help each child excel in academics, but to place a huge focus on acquiring fluency in a second language and to teach a profound understanding of a "green" approach to living. Costa Verde's entire curriculum centers on ecology and respect for the environment. Chalk boards were filled with the children's hand written personal sayings like, "You need to clean the earth as good as you clean your body." The kids were so excited to see meet each professional surfer. Surf Ambassadors, James Pribram and Chuck Patterson, played a series of games in celebration of Earth Day that required them to run around the playground with buckets of water on their heads and get completely drenched. Hawaiians Ekolu Kalama and Ikaika Kawai brought a bit of Hawaiian culture the to classes by playing the eukele and teaching the kids about the Hawaiian culture. The kid's sweet voices and laughter echoed thoughout the school. It was definitely a day I'll never forget.

I have visited Sayulita several times in the past, but this trip definitely left a warm fuzzy feeling in my body. I have a small grin on my face as I type this blog in my office. I did manage to score some fun surf, help raise some money for the community and meet some amazingly talented people that will be lifelong friends forever. But honestly, I think it was the unbelievably sweet smiles on the children's faces as the waved goodbye that makes my heart melt.

First off, a big thank you to everyone who made the inaugural Punta Sayulita Longboard & Stand-Up Paddle Classic on April 17th and 18th an incredibly fun and successful event that was not only a blast for the thousands of folks who came out for it but, best of all, helped the local community and coastal ecosystem. It was the first of what's sure to become a major annual event and is already known around Sayulita as "the Classic".
Kevin Roberts, a principal with event organizer Punta Sayulita, was thrilled. "This year's Classic was blessed by good waves and a great community vibe that surrounded the weekend event," he said. "Moreover, with the support of the competitors, sponsors, volunteers and spectators, the Classic was able to raise a total of US$9,000 for the local chapter of The Reef Check Foundation and the Punta Sayulita Foundation."
In addition to the remarkable natural beauty of Sayulita, our Honorary Classic Ambassadors made the weekend particularly special, including surfing legends James "Eco Warrior" Pribram, Carlos "Coco" Nogales and local hero, Mexico's National Longboard Champion, Patricio "Ticho" Gonzalez. They were joined by Mexico's most recognizable celebrity couple, Andrea Legarreta and Erick Rubin, the Nayarit Secretary of Tourism, Edwin Hernandez, and the Mayor of the Bay of Banderas, Hector Paniagua.
And then there were the amazing competitions themselves, which featured an international field of professional and amateur surfers competing in longboard and stand-up paddle ("SUP") surf contests, along with open ocean SUP distance races.
The festivities began on Saturday morning, with an hour-long blessing ceremony performed by an indigenous Huichol Indian group, captivating spectators and competitors alike, and making way for the great waves in every riveting competition that followed.
In a tightly contested Men's SUP surf contest featuring SUP legends Chuck Patterson of Dana Point, CA, Ekolu Kalama of Molokai, Hawaii, and Sayulita resident, Ryan Helm, a relative newcomer to SUP surf competitions—26-year old Ikaika Kawai of Maui, Hawaii—took the SUP title, with Helm capturing 2nd place and Patterson taking 3rd place. Kawai's win at the Classic qualified him to compete in the SUP World Tour Trials taking place in Biarritz, France next weekend. "I'm really excited, it was fun," says Kawai. "I've only been competing since last summer and this was my first contest with my new Focus™ gear, the 10’ Pro board and paddle."
Iron man Chuck Patterson took charge in the 10k Punta to Punta open ocean SUP distance race, placing first with a winning time of 1 hour and 20 minutes, with Ryan Helm taking 2nd and Dave Collins finishing 3rd place.
After two days of competition lasting late into Sunday afternoon, Sayulita resident and 3-time Mexican National Longboard champion, Patricio "Ticho" Gonzalez, edged out "Toes on The Nose" team rider, Darren Eudaly, of Laguna Beach, CA to take 1st Place in the Men's Longboard contest. Gonzalez pulled off an amazing and exhausting come-back win, working his way through the loser's bracket after losing in his first heat on Saturday morning.
On the women's side, professional Mary Osborne of Ventura, California took 1st place in the women's longboard contest, edging out 15-year old, up-and-coming longboarder Hallie Rohr of San Clemente, CA who nabbed 2nd place with Michelle Richards of Nova Scotia, CA in 3rd place. Hallie's teammate on the San Clemente High School Surf Team, 16-year old Emmy Merrill, held her own being the only woman competing against the men in the SUP contest and in the 10k SUP distance race. Merrill outlasted several men in the SUP race, placing 8th overall with a time of 1 hour and 35 minutes.
According to Honorary Ambassador James Pribram, "The Punta Sayulita Classic was a great example of an event that was predicated on the good old vibe in surfing know as the 'aloha spirit'. Today surfing for me isn't so much about riding a particular board or riding the biggest wave or competition for that matter. It's about the people who are joined at the hip for the love of the ocean. I admire those who give back to the very thing that has given them so much and the Punta Sayulita Longboard & SUP Classic was a perfect example of just that."
The Classic received significant interest from the media and was covered by both Fox Sports Mexico and Televisa Sports Network (TDN), as well as two independent television production companies, one of which is going to incorporate its coverage of the Classic into a tourism video promoting the Riviera Nayarit where Sayulita is located. Highlights from the Classic can be seen on these Mexican cable channels.

Last week I was asked to model in DEEP Magazine's upcoming swimsuit feature. The entire shoot was done underwater in the Body Glove dive pool in LA. Quite a fun shoot, felt like a prune afterwards, but I heard the photos look amazing. Keep your eyes out for it on stands in May.

Winter Update

It has been a incredible 2010 winter and it's far from over. Hot weather, cold weather, snowfall, rainfall, and non-stop swells has kept me unbelievably busy. I haven't written a blog in quite sometime, which means there has been so many great events to share with the world. So here it goes...

December 2009:

I spent 10 days on a boat in the northern atolls of Fiji. Our crew consisted of Holly Beck, Jennifer Flannigan, Kaley Swift, Chandler Parr, three photographers, and a very friendly Fijian boat crew upon the gorgeous Tui Tai. Pictures and articles will be running nationally and internationally soon. Keep your eyes peeled.

January:

Great start to a new exciting year! 2010 here I come! I have been non-stop ever since the new year. I recently moved into a new office downtown Ventura where I run my surfing business, Mary Osborne Inc., and Solymar Tan. I am learning how to become organized. It's amazing what you can do when your in the country for more than two weeks.

Mid January- Scored perfect surf all over Ventura County and flew to Orlando, Florida for theSurf EXPO Trade show. I met with head people at Panama Jack, Maui Jim and a few other companies. Below are a few pictures from my friend Seth de Roulet @ Rincon. If your a surfer, well, I don't have to elaborate much. The surf has been incredible this winter. I been logging some serious miles on my Element searching for uncrowded surf as well as filming a lot with my friend Dave Nash.

End January: I was invited down to Cabo, Mexico to teach my friend and owner of Her Energy drink how to surf. Unlike in California, the water was perfectly warm and weather very bronzable. Our surf sesson at Cabo Surf Hotel didn't last long because Brett managed to find a rock covered in sea urchins. His poor little feet. Thank goodness there is tequila in Mexico. February:

It is the month of red, flowers, chocolates and love. That's right, Valentine's Day has arrived for 2010. I personally have never had a big Valentine's Day nor do I honestly care if it is a good day or bad day. This year I surfed all morning by myself and it was fabulous. A few days prior I threw a big party in my office and Solymar Tan (my crazy fun side business) was rocking and rolling. Thursday February 11 was a fabulous and fun "Ladies Night" gathering. This evening consisted of 70 plus women consuming everything they possibly could like spray tanning, waxing, hair blow dries, Vodka Infusion martinis, food by the Greek restaurant, live music by Jimmy Z, three various jewelry companies, and much much more fun women's necessities. The best part was that we gave %10 of sales to Free Wheelchair Mission (the organization is in Haiti right now). Check out this video if you can manage the shakiness of my tiny video camera....

Not only did I host a big party the week of Valentine's day, but I managed to host a video for Haas Automation in Oxnard. My friend Dave Nash got me the gig as their host for the "how to videos." It definitely wasn't a easy job, considering the tech savvy language I had to learn... thank god for editing! Here are a few pix from the shoot.

I also did a shoot for Season's catering and pretended I was a wife. Pretty fun dressing up as a bride!

This week I have been filming every morning, working on proposals, negotiating contracts and involved in several fun meetings. It basically has been non-stop, but I am loving every moment.

Just as things were slowing down, I found myself in the city of Corona at Fender guitars headquarters. The crew from the "Surf Cruise Cup" which consisted of Jesse Billauer, Jonathan Blake Salazar and Robert Crancer all met up for a afternoon of fun. I never knew how much work went into making a guitar. One of the most random things I saw at Fender was that they used HAAS machines...strange small workd right?I have a entirely new love for music.

~How many girls do you know that can model, write books, start business, teach surfing and still rip harder than you? Not many, right? I didn’t either until I met Mary Osborne, from Ventura, California.

We caught up at the Venice Grind café last month and I have to confess I was expecting to meet someone different… Maybe the typical model who happens to like surfing or maybe the surfer chick who is cute and does modeling on the side. I was definitely wrong! Mary’s got her own thing going on. She is creating a unique style that has been catching my attention since the first time I’ve heard of her.

Mary Osborne / More Waves

Mary Osborne is a gifted California surfer and model who is super-stoked on life and adven ture. Her rela tion ship with Patagonia allows her to travel and be an ambas sador for the envi ron ment. We caught up with Mary to ask her about her busy life.

What was your child hood like?
I had an amaz ing child hood. I was raised at Solimar Beach with my mother and father (who are still mar ried), my three older broth ers, my grand par ents who lived down the street and an entire neigh borhood that was like family.

When did you get your first surf board?
When I was 15, I saved up babysit ting money and bought my first surf board at Waveline Surf Shop in Ventura. I was so excited and I wish I still had that board today.

What was the feel ing you had when you first stood on a surf board?
It was a big rush of fun! I was so excited that I was actu ally stand ing and rid ing a wave. I was so proud of myself and at that moment I fell in love with surf ing. I wanted more waves!

Who did you look up to and admire when you were a young woman?
My three older broth ers were my inspi ra tion. I wanted to as good as them in and out of the water. I also loved Jessica Little (who was our local pro surfer girl here in Ventura) and Matty Slater because she ripped in the water as well.

What is your rela tion ship with Patagonia like?
I am very for tu nate to be with a com pany like Patagonia. I am what they call an “ambas sador” for the com pany on and off for the last 8 years. I help with prod uct design, test ing and surf mar ket ing. Patagonia has taught me so much in so many lev els. As I have got ten a bit older, or shall I say “more wise,” I have come to real ize what com pa nies I really want to be involved in and work with. It’s not about hav ing as many spon sors as pos si ble or the biggest pay checks any more. Now, it’s about want ing to be a part of a com pany that is carv ing new paths for the future, using inno v a tive core prod ucts and giv ing back to our environment.

Patagonia’s core phi los o phy and envi ron men tal aspects have blended into my every day life. I am learning how to be more eco-friendly and how to make ben e fi cial choices for not only myself but our future gen er a tions. Patagonia has taught me to open my eyes to the world, live sim ply, play hard, work hard and be thank ful for every thing I have. I am very for tu nate to be work ing with such a suc cess ful com pany and have them sup port me in my surf ing world. I hope to con tinue to work with Patagonia for future years to come.

Of all the places you have trav eled to, what place in par tic u lar stands out and why?
Every place I have been to has some thing spe cial about it. I was just in Fiji two weeks ago and it was def initely amaz ing. The surf had great poten tial in the remote islands we char tered around, but the lack of swell equaled small waves. We were aboard the boat Tui Tai doing a surf-humanitarian trip with four other pro surfer girls. We ended up vis it ing a tiny vil lage that had never had vis i tors the entire time they lived on the island. We shared a mem o rable day together danc ing, talk ing, shar ing sto ries, eat ing coconuts and fruit. We brought them gifts each girl donated and the Tui Tai boat wrote the head of the vil lage a check right there on the spot. It was pretty amazing!

Who/what inspires you?
Anyone who takes risks, chances and lives a pos i tive lifestyle.

What is the great est thing you have learned in your life?
Everyone is dif fer ent in so many ways, so I try not to judge and get to know them. You never know what you might learn from another per son or when you will cross paths with them again.

Do you have any regrets or wish you had done some thing dif fer ently?
There are only a few regrets I have, but they are not even worth talk ing about The only things are sim ple things and, hon estly, they are things that I can still do in life. For exam ple, I was asked to work on a boat char ter in Mexico and I said “no”. I really wish I would have said “yes” so I could have surfed amaz ing surf and learned more about boats, how they work, char ter ing, etc. I love boats and this would have been a real treat.

What are you most proud of?
Being able to travel the world surf ing. It was once just a dream as a young girl. I am very proud of the hard work I have put into my surf ing career and all the great things I have learned along the way.

What mean ing does surf ing hold for you and how has it changed your life?
Surfing is my entire life now. I live every day in and around the ocean. Surfing has shaped me in so many ways. I have learned so much about life and other cul tures through surf ing and trav el ing. Every adven ture opens my eyes to new things. I am extremely grate ful for what I have and don’t have. The chal lenges and risks I take have only made me a stronger, more edu cated and all-around a bet ter person.

What brings you the most hap pi ness in the world?
My fam ily and friends. Also, warm, mind less, per fect waves—but fam ily always first.

Who are some of the peo ple you feel are shap ing the path for surf ing today?
There are so many young male and female young surfers who are tak ing surf ing to an entirely new level. The tal ented abil i ties, new inno v a tive tricks, rid ing big ger waves, and all of the new shapes of surfboards.

What is in your cur rent quiver? What is cur rently your favorite board? Your favorite surf spot?
Favorite surf spot is in Ventura. My quiver con sists of clas sic sin gle fin long boards, high per for mance long boards, quads, fun shapes—and they are all in cute col ors. (Laughs)

Right now, I have two favorite Patagonia boards that Fletcher Chouinard shaped me. One is what we call a “Fark” (quad fun shape short board) and the other I call “Pinky” and it is my tri fin all-around longboard. I ride Pinky all the time; it’s not only cute, but works amaz ing in all sizes of surf!

What’s your favorite meal?
A healthy salad or I like to indulge in Mexican food.

What are you cur rently lis ten ing to on your iPod?
Ray Lamontagne, Steel Pulse, Paulo Nutini, Natalie Merchant, Todd Hannigan I lis ten to every thing and anything.

What are you most grate ful for?
Health, fam ily and the ocean.

What causes/organizations do you sup port?
I am involved in sev eral non-profits. I believe it is extremely impor tant to give back. I love peo ple, children and help ing those in need. I am apart of Free Wheelchair Mission, Boarding for Breast Cancer, Women’s Sports Foundation and sev eral oth ers. Every year I help host a “surf ing cruise ship”; all the proceeds go to var i ous organizations.

What’s next for Mary Osborne?
It’s non stop right now, which is excit ing, and a lot of new things are on the hori zon. Besides work ing closely with my spon sors (Patagonia, Bettybelts, Go211.com), I have started a new side busi ness Solymar Tan. I am set ting up surf camps and yoga retreats (www.mosurfcamp.com). Hopefully still trav el ing this upcom ing year, writ ing for var i ous projects, maybe film ing a new TV documentary/reality surf show and, as of this morn ing, maybe work ing with Panama Jack (www.panamajack.com) on a few dif fer ent lev els. This next year is going to be an excit ing one and I am really look ing for ward to it! New adven tures, learning more, surf ing, and being healthy!

Aryana first time surfing...

Aryana Ashlie, 5 yrs old, from North Carolina. Here are some clips I put together of her surfing for her family to take back home with them. She was so cute and had a blast!

A message from her Mother: At five years old Aryana Ashlie loves to move and is fearless so when the opportunity came for her to paddle out with Mary Osborne she jumped at the chance. Being no stranger to speed, Aryana was relaxed and took her cues from Mary out in the ocean. When asked how it felt being on the board she said, "It was so much fun and when we stood up we went fast, really, really fast. The goodest part was falling down at the end. You get your hair wet then pop right up and if a big wave comes you can jump over it. It was awesome with Mary and cool and funny. I was brave because Mary would never let go of me."

Fiji...day one...3 hours...a long journey ahead

A women's soft voice whispered in my ear "Mary, wake up. We are here. We have landed."

I opened my eyes slowly and took a gaze outside my window. It was true. I had finally arrived in Fiji.

I remember boarding the flight in complete exhaustion from my busy week prior in Ventura. I walked down the aisle of Air Pacific's flight 811 where I found myself awarded the very last seat in the plane parallel to the toilets. A lovely Fijian woman took her seat next to me and began telling me her life story. Her Fijian accented voice was soft , subtle and sweet. Her green eyes were glowing brightly amongst her tanned sun-kissed skin. She had been visiting the US because one of her 5 children was attending University in San Diego. She proceeded to tell me how much she loved the US and how lucky we are to live here. I agreed with her but honestly all I could think about was how awful of a check in I had combined with the hustle and bustle of the LAX airport frenzy. As she continued to speak, I envisioned crystal clear water refreshing my pale skin, green palm trees blowing in the wind, perfect Fijian swells and the next 14 days of pure bliss aboard the Tui Tai. Our conversation banter continued about an hour before we finally lifted off the runway. The last thing I remember her telling me was, " Mary, you are going to the island of Nami. It is sacred, magical and identifies beautiful." Suddenly my eyelids began to feel heavy, my attention slowly faded and I was out like a light.

Our crew consists of 5 female surfers, two photographers (one from LA and one from National Geographic Magazine), Tim the tour guide, a female yoga instructor, one family vacationing with us and apparently 18 staff members aboard the 140 foot yacht known as the Tui Tai.

We are currently sitting in a local hotel getting to know one another, reading magazines, sipping on Fiji Water, cyber spacing, and killing time before we head onto our next adventure. Due to the large amount of surfboards and equipment we cannot take a small inter island flight to our destination. We will be enjoying our first sights of Fiji by a 3 hour taxi ride followed by a 13 hour ferry ride. If all goes as planned we will be boarding the Tui Tai sometime tomorrow morning, November 24th, Fijian time.

Lightest pack job in my history

The hardest part of traveling is deciding which surfboards and clothing you are going to take with you. It's almost as difficult as a girl packing only one cute dress and a pair of high heel shoes. The problem with me is that I am not only a girl, but a girl who surfs! I love bringing not only multiple pairs of high heel shoes but as many surfboards as I can fit in one board bag with wheels. It can become a difficult process. I have been basically living out of a bag and traveling for the last five years of my life. I still can't ever get this process down. One too many pairs of shirts, dresses, shoes, bikinis, surfboards, brushes, hats etc. I always make the mistake of bringing too much. Then again, once I made the mistake of bringing too little and I was the smelliest girl on the trip with the dirtiest t-shirts. (just kidding)

Today, I must say I figured it out. When you decide in life what works... you stick with it. Why change it? Right now, I am getting ready to board a 22 hour plane ride to the Maldives for a ten 10 boat trip. I am so excited to get on the plane and fly away to one of the most beautiful places on earth. I'm not writing this to tell you about this fantastic trip, yet the fact that I have conquered my packing issues.

Patagonia is the key. This may sound like they paid me to say this, but honestly it's the truth. I am taking three surfboards that are so light my board bag feels empty. I honestly feel so confident that one board would be perfect (yet I like the emergency back up) This is a first for me! In the past, I have struggled to lift my boardbag on my car alone and have knocked over innocent civilians in the airport. Not only is the weight a huge issue, try checking into a flight. Overweight luggage is a horrible factor these days. The amount of money I have paid in luggage fees is enough for a down payment on a house. I have three great surfboards I love and they are going to be so ideal to travel with. I have one small roll away bag with several options of clothing. The best part of Patagonia clothing is that you can roll up all your dresses, shirts, skirts and when you a ready to wear them there will be no wrinkles. This is key, especially when you never know how nice you need to look. I have everything a traveling surfer girl will need from trunks and bikinis to a nice black dress. I even managed to squeeze in a extra pair of shoes ;)

The Sounds of the INDY 500

Indy 500 with HER Energy Drink

I had one of the most fun experiences I have had in a while. I have briefly been working with the new energy drink geared for women called HER. I love the taste, what the brand embodies and the cute hot pink packaging. I had no idea that this little obsession I had with this drink was going to lead me to the INDY 500.

I received a phone call from the head of marketing asking me if I wanted to come meet the company at the Indy 500. HER was sponsoring the "hot pink" indy car #99 with the driver, Alex Lloyd. Without hesitation, I cancelled my weekend appointments and jumped a overnight flight to Indianapolis. I had no clue what to expect and I knew nothing about racing. I arrived in the airport with a town car waiting and was taken to the Hilton Hotel. HER energy was all over the hotel lobby. Signs, posters, pink ribbons hanging and workers all dialed in marketing gear. It was then I realized I was in for a real treat.

After resting for a few hours, I headed back to the lobby where I met Paul Tate, a TV producer as well as a bunch of down to earth celebrities. I thought for sure everyone knew each other. Come to find out we are all on the same page. No one has ever seen a Indy race and it was a first to Indiana for all. These elements allowed our group of collective actors, actresses, producers and friends mesh easily. We all shared our stories as we headed over to the Gnassi racing headquarters.

I have never really thought about racing before. I knew it was a big sport. I knew it was cool to say you are a "race-car driver" and that is about it. I didn't realize the love of the sport and what actually goes on behind the television screen when building a actual Indy car. The Gnassi headquarters opened my eyes to racing. The tour we took allowed us to see the actual making of a vehicle. There are rooms specifically designed for creating nuts and bolts, rooms for gears, airbrush painting, wheels, and so forth. Our tour was about a hour long and ended with introduction to the famous drivers who have one the Indy 500 in the past. I was fascinated with not only the manufacturing of the vehicles, but the size of the Indy drivers. They are tiny. I sat in one of the cars and couldn't even fit my behind in the car. It was hilarious!

The evening started out with a great dinner in our luxury hotel restaurant. Bottles of vino flowed around the table as we all shared our stories. Sometimes I realize how blonde I really am when I don't realize who celebrities are. I honestly don't pay attention half the time so I couldn't even tell you who was with us. I just know they are all very talented people.

After dinner we proceeded to a few parties in downtown Indianapolis. The Playboy party was hilarious. Sexy little bunnies danced around the dance floor in between the stars of "Dancing with the Stars." I couldn't stop cracking up and before I knew I was right in the mix.

The morning quickly came and I have to admit I was dragging a little bit. We jumped in our limo bus and was police escorted into the racetrack. I thought it was a joke when we were told we had police escorts but it wasn't. Sirens were blasting as we drove in and out of oncoming traffic while dodging pedestrians. Fans flocked the streets and vender's tents flooded the entire inside of the track. I have never scene anything like this before. It was the biggest racetrack I have ever laid eyes on. It made the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach look pathetic. Being only 5'4, it was so easily for me to get lost. My eyes were on actor Omar Miller and his 6-5 tall body hoping not to loose our crew. Before I knew it I was in our suite watching the racers gear up and ready to rock. Crowds yelled, screamed and clapped throughout the National Anthem as the B-25 Bombers flew above. I had chills and tears in my eyes.

"Racers start your engines..." The sound of the cars are like nothing I have ever heard. Earplugs barely do the trick and the television doesn't do this sporting event justice. Our box was located on the final turn of the race track: Final turn= crashes. Yes, we saw them all. It was shocking and scary, yet disturbingly exciting. My only pre Indy races I had seen before were at the Ventura Fairgrounds. Every summer Saturday night my friends and I gather together to watch the box cars...not quite the same I know. Here we bet dollar bills, drink beer, scream at the cars to go faster while enjoying the dirt in our faces. The Indy was just slightly different. There we bet with $20.00's and $100's, drink fancy cocktails, and the word "fast" is a understatement.

I could go on and one about this fantastic event. It was truly a honor to be apart of the HER crew. Everyone must go and watch this event once in their lifetime. It was a blast!!! I think I should have been Danika Patrick..... jk

This weekend I was invited to join a few magazine editors for a fun kayaking trip to the Channel Islands. Editors from Sunset Magazine, Viv, Sky West and Arroyo Seco Journal were here checking out my hometown of Ventura. I don't think it is because of my surfing background that I get invited on these trips anymore. I honesty love Ventura probably more than any oneI know here in the town. I have been fortunate enough to travel around the world a few times and back, but I still always find myself loving my hometown the best.

We boarded the Island Packers "cattle" boat around 8am. Fog slowly lifted as we cruised the glassy waters for about an hour n half till we reached Scorpion Bay. Sun reflected off the crystal clear water, the hills were glowing green and several unique birds flew above us. We kayaked with our own personal guide for four fun hours. The swells were out of the south, which almost had me wishing I was surfing, but my mind continued to be intrigued by our guide's humorous stories and the beautiful surroundings. We enter four major caves which was quite exciting. I have never kayaked for this long of a duration in my lifetime. Just as I was getting sick of it, another cave would pop up. We timed our entrance with the swells as they pushed us from side to side on the rock walls. I managed to get the nose of my kayak stuck in a rock which was quite embarrassing and made my heart race with adrenaline. One would think a surfer has some sort of kayaking skills, but honestly I have only used a kayak to get to and from. It was hilarious. Needless to say, it was a blast!

We left the island with huge smiles on our faces. On the way home we gathered our thoughts and shared stories with one another. Just when we thought the trip was over, Mother Nature blessed us with some beautiful creatures. Dolphins and whales surrounding the ship. It's funny, no matter how many times in my life I have seen these sea creatures, I am still as excited as a kid in a candy store. I, along with the rest of the tourists aboard, pulled out my iphone camera and snapped a few pics.

Solymar Airbrush Tan

Yes, the rumors are true...I have started a small side business: Solymar Airbrush tanning.

About 6 months ago I was attending a formal event in LA. As I put on my gorgeous black dress, I looked down at my legs and thought to myself, "Boy I am so white." It was the middle of winter here in Ventura and I had not been traveling due to a job I took teaching kids to surf at Cate High School. Long story short, I decided to go get a spray tan. I searched online for a place to do this and found a salon in Camarillo. It took me a total of 45 mintues to drive out there, get sprayed and come home. I looked amazing! I was totally blown away at how great, healthy and bronzy my skin looked. The best party about this was that I didn't just ruin my skin laying in the sun all day or a tanning bed.

A few months went by and I decided to go again to get sprayed for another event. This time I took a girlfriend with me because she wanted to try it. Once again, I was blown away by how amazing it looked and received several compliments from people about my skin. As the tan wore off, I began to do some research about this so called "airbrush tanning." So many questions raced through my head. "Was it safe? Does it ever make you orange? Will it streak?" and the biggest question of all time, "How come no one does mobile spray tanning in Ventura?" After obsessing for a few months and endless hours of research, I decided to take a class in L.A. Before I knew it I was trained, certified and ready to spray. I was in love with the idea of a "healthy tan." No more sunburns (except I do travel a lot to foreign hot countries), peeling, tanning beds etc. Let's face it (girls who are reading this) everyone loves to have a healthy looking tan. Right?????

Filmore Skate Park Grand Opening

It was a super exciting day in Filmore today with the opening of their first skate park. I was totally blown away at how many people from old to young were at the event skating the bowls, watching and supporting fellow skaters. Pros such as Sean Edwards, Michael Early, and Jeff Tatum were demonstrating their skills for the crowd. One of my new favorite old school skaters, Brad Edwards, was dominating on his longboard skateboard. It completely made me want to learn how to ride skateboards. So skilled, smooth and stylish. To top it off, legendary skater, Tony Alva, was there not only skating but singing in his band G.F.P.

Gosh it's flat...snow?

I cant handle the flat Pacific Ocean any longer! This last weekend I decided to head up to Big Bear to test gravity as well as my "balancing legs."

It was a blast! We snowboarded for two days including one night time session that was uncrowded and surprisingly warm air temperature. I am surprised to see after one long year my snowboard legs still work and luckily I didnt break any bones. Hopefully the surf will increase soon, but I wouldnt mind another crazy rain and snowstorm to pass the time until the waves increase in size.

I wanted to share a fun great images shot by photographer David Pu'u. I attended a three day PWC rescue training course in Morro Bay this past weekend. Myself along with four other females and one male firefighter trained three full days with one nighttime operation till 12:30am at sea. The weather enabled us to deal all elements of Mother Nature such as warm sunshine, heavy rains, gale force winds, stormy wintery seas and big rolling swells out in the open waters. Fish, birds, otters, and seals surrounded us at every moment. Let's just say the ocean was alive up there. Check out the images attached. Beautiful shots! It was one of the most exciting yet mentally challenging things I have done in a long time.

3rd Annual Surf Dog A Thon 2008 San Diego

This summer I was asked to help judge the 3rd Annual Surf Dog-a-Thon. I was shocked to see how many supporters flocked the beach as dogs of every size and shape surfed all the way to shore. After a fantastic performance in the water there was a costume contest with various celebrities judging the final outcome. It was the funniest thing I have ever scene and participated in.

The event raised over $50,000 for the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

"The Necklace: Thirteen Women and the Experiment That Transformed Their Lives" by Cheryl Jarvis. Ballantine Books, $24

"The Necklace" could as easily have been titled "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Diamonds." Thirteen women, many of whom didn't know each other, bought a $37,000 necklace, and it made such a difference in their lives.

Actually the ringleader, Jonell Mclain, begged the Ventura, Calif., jewelry-store owner to reduce the 15-carat neck candy to $15,000. The jeweler agreed on one condition: His wife, Priscilla, must be part of the group. Jonell wasn't organizing a book club where like-minded women come together to discuss titles they agree upon. She was out trolling for 13 women willing to put out more than a grand for a piece of the rocks.

The women ranged in age from 50 to 62, some had husbands, some had lovers, some had had both. Politically they were all over the map. Not one of them was particularly interested in jewelry. Each wrote the check because she wanted to take part in the project. There were, of course, disagreements. The first took place over naming the necklace. Fortunately, the name "Julia Child" was voted down in favor of "Jewelia." And boy did J. travel, and not just in the month-to-month tradeoff from woman to woman.

Jewelia had a wonderful time in Paris, boogie-boarded in Hawaii and sky-dived with the television cameras trained on her. That upset the group, who informed the erring member that Jewelia could go anywhere but no one was to alert the media.

Still, the necklace became a local celebrity as word spread and saleswomen and hairstylists asked to try it on. It was loaned out to brides, and that caused arguments (should it only be worn by members' daughters?) and fronted fund-raisers, which brought more discussion about which causes were worthy.

But mostly Jewelia brought 13 women, and an extended circle beyond the original, together in an unexpected way. They battled and bonded, but more than that, everyone had something new in her life. Something sparkly - new friendships. Oh, and the necklace, too.

Cover Update: Surf’s Up For Mary Osborne

We recently got to catch up with Mary Osborne, pro surfer, former Surf Girls star and May 2006 cover story. Mary says things are going great, this past week she won a Pro Longboard Association event in Ventura, California. She had one thing to say about the contest–”Wahooo!!!”

Surfing competitively isn’t the only thing Mary’s been up to; she filled us in on two other projects she’s immersed herself in. First off, Mary will be hosting an All Girls Surf Camp in August in association with Ventura Makos Surf Camp.

Then in October, Mary is slated to be a featured surfer aboard The Surf Cruise Cup, a cruise that’s all about surfing. Joining her will be three-time longboard champion Colin McPhillips, and Robert “Wingnut” Weaver–who starred in two Endless Summer movies, as well as the amazing 2003 surf documentary Step Into Liquid.

“[The] Surf Cruise Cup is going to be a blast. I recommend all families, surfers and music lovers join in,” Mary says.

The boat will set sail on a week-long trip to prime surf spots in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Check out this poster (PDF).
